Kiko leads a beautiful flock of Canada geese, and he leads it well — searching from the head of the V for the water, grass and mulberry bushes his families will need when the goslings hatch. Then Tunka decides he should be leading instead, and takes half the flock to the wrong side of the lagoon.
What follows is a full year on the migration trail: hatchings and hatch-day parties, flight lessons, a fall from the sky over a busy downtown, a storm that scatters everyone, a zoo, and a long limp south to the Florida coast. By the time they land, the fledglings have grown up — and so, quietly, has everyone else.
