About Debra

Debra Adams

A retired teacher who loves to write children's stories — and who still reads them out loud to whoever will sit still.

She taught for a career. The stories kept coming anyway.

Debra Adams spent her working life with children, and she writes like someone who has watched a room of them decide, in real time, whether a story is worth listening to. Her sentences are plain. Her characters argue. Nobody is punished for being wrong — they are given the chance to say so.

Adventures of Kiko and the Flock is her first published book, and it carries the classroom in it: a flock that has to work out leadership, apology, patience and freedom while an entire migration is going on around them. Fellow educators have been previewing the story ahead of release.

Debra Adams, who holds a BA in Teaching Spanish and an M.Ed., specializing in Curriculum and Instruction, has dedicated her career to the development of young minds. Her transition from teaching to writing is a testament to her belief in the transformative power of storytelling. ‘Adventures of Kiko and the Flock’ is not just a tale for entertainment; it's crafted to instill essential social skills in young readers, promoting positive relationships and thoughtful decision-making.

"This book was born from my experience in the classroom," says Adams. "Storytelling captivates young students and encourages them to reflect on the lessons learned. I authored ‘The Adventures of Kiko and the Flock’ to show our children the value of nurturing positive relationships and the wisdom to handle challenges calmly and effectively."

Better than that — I believe we all grew up on this migration trail.

Kiko, in the last pages of the book

Canada geese were an obvious choice and a difficult one. They are ordinary enough that any child in the northern half of the country has stood under a V of them and heard the honking. They are also, for a whole year of their lives, doing exactly what this book is about: raising young, defending a patch of ground, following somebody, and flying a very long way together.
